The purpose of a cremation vault, sometimes called an urn vault, is to provide protection against water or other natural elements. Today cemeteries often insist on the use of urn vaults when families choose in-ground burial of a loved one's cremation urn, because of their structural integrity. Cremation vaults offer protection for the urn, and prevent the grave from settling.
